Establishment of Solapur Market Committee
As per the Bombay Agricultural Produce Market Act 1939 and the rules thereunder 1947, the then Mumbai Government vide notification number APM-27 dated 12/8/1959, imposed market areas on North Solapur and South Solapur talukas. Accordingly, Solapur Market Committee was established on 12/8/1959. Thereafter, the then Mumbai Government vide notification PMC/1060-30690 G (2) dated 6/10/1960 appointed the first Government Appointed Market Committee. The actual functioning of Solapur Market Committee started on 17/4/1961 on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, Basava Jayanti, Shiv Jayanti. Currently, the Solapur Market Committee is functioning as per the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Purchase and Sale (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963 and the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Purchase and Sale (Development and Regulation) Rules, 1967.
Market Area and Geographical Information
The Solapur Market Committee covers two talukas, North Solapur and South Solapur talukas. There are a total of 131 villages in the market area, 41 in Solapur city and North Solapur taluka and 90 in South Solapur taluka. As per the 2011 census, the population of Solapur city is 951118, the population of North Solapur taluka is 105114, and the population of South Solapur taluka is 260046, making the total population of the market area 1316278. The total area of the market area is 1941/60 sq. km. out of which Solapur city has 178/57 sq. km. And North Solapur Taluka is 567/73 sq. km and South Solapur Taluka is 1195/30 sq. km. The total geographical area of North Solapur Taluka under the jurisdiction of Solapur Market Committee is 68303 hectares and South Solapur Taluka is 119463 hectares, totaling 187766 hectares. In the Kharif season, mainly bajra, tur, maize are grown in the arable area and in the Rabi season, mainly jowar, wheat, gram, black gram, etc. are grown and in the horticultural area, mainly sugarcane, grapes, pomegranate and other fruits and vegetables are grown. The minimum temperature of Solapur in the year 2024-2025 is 14/0 Celsius and the maximum temperature is 45/00 Celsius. The average rainfall of Solapur is 541/00 mm. mm.

- Auctions for raisins (Bedana)—a specific agricultural commodity—are conducted every Thursday within the main market yard of the Market Committee.
To derive the maximum benefit from the provisions of the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963, and the Rules of 1967, farmers are advised to bring dried and clean agricultural produce for sale.

Solapur Agricultural Products Market Committee initially controlled the transactions of 18 agricultural products in the year 1961. Currently, there are 69 agricultural products under the control of the market committee.
